What Is Structured Data and Why Does Your Business Need It?
Structured data is one of those things that sounds technical but has a very simple purpose: it tells search engines and AI assistants exactly what your business is, what you do, and where you are — in a language they can understand.
What it actually is
Structured data is a snippet of code (usually JSON-LD) that sits in your website's HTML. It's invisible to visitors but readable by machines. Think of it as a filing card for your business that Google, ChatGPT, Siri, and other AI tools can scan instantly.
Here's what it typically includes:
- Business name and type (restaurant, plumber, salon, etc.)
- Address and service area
- Opening hours
- Phone number and email
- Services offered and prices
- Customer reviews and ratings
- FAQs
Why it matters
Without structured data, search engines have to guess what your website is about. They read your text, try to understand it, and make assumptions. Sometimes they get it right. Often they don't.
With structured data, there's no guessing. You're explicitly telling Google: "This is a hair salon in Manchester. It's open Tuesday to Saturday. A cut and blow dry costs £35. Here are five customer reviews." Google (and AI assistants) can then use this information directly — in search results, knowledge panels, map listings, and AI-generated answers.
The AI connection
This is where it gets really important. AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini don't browse websites the way humans do. They parse structured data to understand businesses. When someone asks "where can I get a good haircut in Manchester?", AI looks for businesses with:
- HairSalon schema markup
- Location data (Manchester)
- Service and price information
- Review data
If your website has this structured data, you're in the running. If it doesn't, you're not — regardless of how good your actual business is.
Does your website have it?
Most small business websites don't. If your site was built with WordPress, Squarespace, or Wix, it might have basic structured data — but it's rarely complete or optimised. Most builders add the bare minimum, if anything at all.
You can check using Google's Rich Results Test. Paste your website URL and see what comes back. If the results are empty or sparse, your business is invisible to AI.
What we do differently
At Webmour, structured data isn't an afterthought — it's built into every site from the start. We implement full Schema.org markup tailored to your business type, including your services, prices, location, hours, FAQs, and reviews. It's one of the main reasons our sites get found by AI assistants that other sites don't.
